Romeo + Juliet is a 1996 American romantic drama film adaptation of William. Romeo + Juliet (Special Edition): Amazon. DVD & Blu- ray. Romeo + Juliet (Special Edition)Share. Why can't all special editions be this good? Our full review. By Jeremy Conrad I must admit, when I first heard about a version of Romeo and Juliet using the traditional Shakespeare language in a modern day environment, I thought it would suck. Romeo + Juliet (Special Edition. However, once I saw the flick I ended up liking it quite a bit. Fox released Baz Luhrmann's vision of Romeo and Juliet in 1. DVD with a muddy non- anamorphic widescreen transfer. Now, with Moulin Rouge doing great, the film is revisited on a single disc special edition that rivals even the best double disc sets. The Movie Okay, you know the story of this movie. It's probably the most well known tales from The Bard. But director Baz Luhrmann delivers it here in a way that's never been seen before. He takes the characters and places them in a modern day Verona Beach (instead of Verona city). Instead of swords, guns are used (yet they have "sword" written on them), and other modern day elements are infused almost flawlessly into the original story. Some people are turned away from the movie by the use of the original dialog and script, but that has to be done. I actually don't think the movie would be as good if they didn't do that as it preserves the original intention of the story instead of just using it as inspiration for what could be turned into a regular, boring, teen flick. They also put together a great cast. You couldn't choose a cuter Juliet than Claire Danes, and John Leguizamo completely steals the show in his portrayal of Tybalt. It may not be for everyone, but if you want to see traditional Shakespeare with a slightly different flavor, you may just find that you like this version of Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet by John Woo. The Video The original DVD featured a non- anamorphic transfer that really wasn't that great. This new anamorphic widescreen transfer is a huge improvement over that original. Color is used throughout the film, and that old transfer was a bit muted. Not so here. Oops! Every shade of color in the movie shines through with the ultimate vibrancy, compression artifacts are completely absent, and the level of clarity here is perfect. Don't you ever say that about House of Buggin' again!"The Audio From the low rumbling of the car engines in the opening, to the nice use of surrounds throughout the film's many musical cues, you're 5. Dolby track. It's nothing that will completely blow you away, but what's there is really good. The perfect Juliet. The Extras The best feature on the disc is easily the full- length audio commentary by director Baz Luhrmann, production designer Catherine Martin, director of photography Don Mc. Alpine, and co- writer Craig Pearce. With that group there, you basically have the team responsible for creating the film and it's a very fluid and interesting track to listen to. They aren't afraid to interrupt each other to point out a detail about a specific scene, such as where Baz notices a boom microphone in a car window reflection for the first time. There are details here the explain some of the controversial choices they made in the film. Also, the they also explain how they decided to go with the traditional Shakespeare dialog in a modern day environment as well as how they braced the audience for it through the use of the story's setup. This is a very good track. I like these menus. In the Director's Gallery menu, you can watch a four- minute "Impact Piece" which sort of sets you up for the movie itself. Then "Why Shakespeare" is a short speech by Baz where he explains why he made this movie the way it is. Pitching Shakespeare" continues that speech where Baz tells the story of how he pitched the movie. The Gas Station" is a nearly seven- minute featurette filled with behind- the- scenes set footage surrounding the sequence that opens the movie. The Pool Scene" follows that same format with rare behind- the- scenes footage edited together to give you a look at the filming of that scene. Finally, "Tybalt's Execution" runs just over three minutes and is even more behind- the- scenes goodness. Cinematographer's Gallery is just as stacked as the Director's. It features six very short clips covering "A Hole in the Wall", "One Light", "Operator", "The Fishtank", "The Elevator", and "The Church". Each clip is entirely made up of behind- the- scenes footage. Moving on to the Design Gallery you find multiple art galliers. The Books" (a collection of very stylistic storyboards), "Guns of Verona Beach", "Cars of Verona Beach", "Production Design" (with narration by Catherine Martin for five different locations of production stills), "Fashion of Verona Beach", and finally "Branding Verona Beach". Music Clips holds two music videos: "Kissing You" and "Wild Hearts Run Free". Marketing R + J contains two TV Spots, the trailer in anamorphic widescreen, and a poster gallery containing multiple different designs. The Extras here, all crammed onto one DVD, are just as good as the special features on the excellent Moulin Rouge set. Instead of cramming promotional EPK crap down your throat, the extras are carried across via behind- the- scenes footage. There's just about everything you'd want to see about the film here, and the commentary is excellent.
